For some, a role is as simple as a particular function given to something or someone. it is expected behavior, persuasion, and manipulation which outcome result is in good or bad encouragements to believe differently. Mass Communications is a born and breed industry that was created on the boarder lines of all three. Through varies of newspapers, radio, magazines, television, and now the Internet, mass communications has always told society the rules and regulations of living and believing. It limited the room for teaching in all religion and following traditional beliefs. To me, mass communications exposed the truth behind the words written in the bible. More so, a reality check. From a young age television, with the aid of my environment, parenting, and grand-parenting, TV has always shown a more well-known example of behavior that has been adopted by many women. Beginning with which toys and dolls to play with and ending with what clothes and make-up flatters personal appearance. Mass Communications is used by different institutions to manipulate their thought about certain races, genders, cultures, etc. Who said only Koreans can do manicures good and Black people had the most rhythm. I don't understand why it is a debate anyway. According to my observations Salsa Dancers can move like the wind. But, it's situations like the ones aforementioned that media misconstrues. Now, it's limited room to limit the space that the government has over the media. I think it's out of hand. If a 'Role Models' goal is to make you think differently by any-means-necessary, than Mass Communications is one hell of a role model. Society says role models are "Good", I even heard someone say "We need more of them in our community" Why do we need them in our community if we have them in magazines, televisions, and the Internet. These mediums change the way we think. They change what we believe and how we behave. Hey, who needs an interpersonal role model, it'll only hinder our personal communication skills. But WHO CARES! We don't need personal communication for interviews, We can just e-mail our interview answers to them. What I'm saying is Mass Communication functions with the job society has found acceptable. Our generation behave off the basis of what is displayed through different mediums but is accepted by the government and most importantly society. There's nothing wrong with the role of Mass Communications but there is something wrong with what we as society consider what is or isn't acceptable. Mass Communications tell us what to do, how to act, what to buy, where to buy, how to think, what not to think, and changes our thoughts and beliefs.
The experience of the race shows that we get our most important education not through books but through our work. We are developed by our daily task, or else demoralized by it, as by nothing else.

I agree with you and I kind of said the same thing in my blog. Mass communication unknowingly affects just about every decision we make to what car we drive, what college we would like to attend, even down to what we decide to wear in the morning. Without Mass Communication I feel, and i am sure that you would agree, that the world would be lost; and even though there are negative forms of journalism for the most part it is here for the greater good in society. Allowing children to get to know different cultures and civilizations without leaving the comforts of thier home. Mass Communication is a beautiful thing.
ReplyDeleteThis was a nice blog and everything you said about mass communication and some personal experiences of your own I can relate to as well. Mass Communication does has an effect on every decision we make in life. Examples include: Do I want a house or an apartment, the type of cars we drive, the type of clothes we were, or even basic decisions life has for you. Without Mass Communications in our lives the society will not know what is going on or what to be apart of. Mass Communication lets us express our feelings, opinions, and beliefs. I am so proud to be a Mass Communication major with an conceration in Broadcast Journalism.
ReplyDeleteOne question do we need or is there a neccessity to have mass communications tell us what to believe, who to believe in, or what clothes to wear? As a baby's intuition, how would we know whats really important if its important at all? If it is important wouldn't be important to our parents or grandparents?
ReplyDeleteHello Whitney, I enjoyed reading your blog. It reflected your intellectual stand point instead of the practical views of society as you suggested that are influenced by Mass Communication. Looking at every aspect of your blog I somewhat agreed with your argument. Also believing by being sarcastic heightens my interests as I read. The media job is to manipulate viewers/readers to promote their product or brand but I hold the viewers/readers responsible to not be influence alone by glamour instead by the quality. There are various stigmas in the media but as an individual I don’t form an opinion base on those. Once again I enjoyed reading your blog and look forward to see what you write in the future. Please, feel free to share your thoughts on my blogs as well. http://creolebird.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteNow we are talking. So, where do we go from here? You are media professionals in training, how can you prepare to work in this field. How do you prepare yourself? How do you open yourself up to difference? That is our task, find where you fit in and let's make sure that we prepare you to be prepared?
